Before coming to St. Paul’s in 2008, Fishburne was rector of St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church, Sanibel Island, Fla., and earlier served parishes in Georgia and the Carolinas. He also serves as president of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes.
A graduate of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., and Virginia Theological Seminary, Arlington, Va., he earned a doctorate in ministry from Sewanee, where he now serves on the Board of Regents.
In his sermon for the 3rd Sunday of Easter airing April 14, “Becoming Ambassadors for Christ,” Fishburne explores two different post-resurrection appearances of Jesus in Acts 9:1-6 and John 21:1-19. In both cases Jesus deals with betrayal: Saul’s persecution of the church and Peter’s denials of Jesus during the trials leading to his crucifixion. “How does the Risen Lord Jesus open our eyes today so that we may become fishers of people and ambassadors of the Gospel of Christ?” he says. “The miraculous life of Jesus in turning around the lives of St. Paul and St. Peter gives us cause for thought and prayer, and for hope and rejoicing.”
Fishburne’s sermon for the 4th Sunday of Easter, April 21, is entitled “Raising the Dead, Shepherding God’s Sheep.” He draws helpful insights from Acts 9:36-43, where Peter raises Dorcas from the dead, and John 10:23-30, in which Jesus claims to be one with God the Father, calling himself the good shepherd. “Are we among the lost sheep to whom the risen Jesus calls? We know the answer,” he says. “We recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd who is one with God and who speaks in the name of God. We know that no one can take us away from his love.”
Each program includes interviews with Fishburne conducted by Wallace, who is executive producer.
