Loading...The National Association of Episcopal Schools announced last week that The Episcopal School of Knoxville was one of 12 recipients of a $1,000 Outreach Fund Grant for use during the 2013-14 school year.
Each school year NAES distributes 10 percent of its budgeted Annual Fund goal as Outreach Fund Grants to members, associate members and regional, state or diocesan Episcopal schools organizations. The grants support projects commensurate with the mission and philosophy of the organization.
“We are delighted to be able to support the mission and ministry of our member schools in this way,” said the Rev. Daniel R. Heischmann, D.D., executive director of NAES.
At ESK, the grant will benefit the second-grade charity store project, providing the necessary funds for equipment replacement in the school’s supply store, which is staffed by second grade students and designed to enhance mathematics education and community service through student-designated proceeds recipients.
“We are very thankful that the NAES selected our school as one of the recipients for this grant,” ESK Lower School Director Nancy Laurence said. “The second grade store project is just one of the many examples of how community service can be integrated into our academic rigor and plays as an integral role as we strive to enrich our student’s intellectual, physical, culture and spiritual growth.”
The money will cover the cost of materials, design and construction of a lockable merchandise cart to help secure the items when the store in closed at the end of each day.
This year, the students raised a total of $568.10 for Friends of the Smokies and tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma through the school store and a free-dress day in support of Earth Day. Friends of the Smokies helps Great Smoky Mountain National Park improve education, natural-resource protection, historic preservation and wildlife protection.
The NAES is an independently incorporated, voluntary membership organization that supports, serves and advocates for the vital work and ministry of those who serve nearly 1,200 Episcopal schools and early childhood education programs throughout the Episcopal Church, as well as school establishment efforts.
