Loading...St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School (SAS) is offering merit scholarships of up to one-third of boarding tuition for outstanding boarding students entering ninth or tenth grade. Claiborne Scholarships are awarded to boarding students who have the strength to lead, the aptitude for academic excellence, and the desire to serve. The designation and support remain in place as long as the student is in good standing, providing a potential scholarship of up to $60,000 over four years. The merit award may be combined with financial aid if need is demonstrated.
Established in 2004, the scholarships are named in honor of Archdeacon William Sterling Claiborne, who was instrumental in the founding of St. Andrew’s School and re-establishing St. Mary’s School for Mountain girls.
To be selected as a Claiborne Scholar a student must have a strong academic record and exhibit leadership qualities that reflect a sense of honor and a commitment to serving the community. This merit-based program is open to all families, including those who would not qualify for need-based aid. The Claiborne Scholarship may also be combined with additional financial aid for families with greater demonstrated need.
SAS is an Episcopal boarding and day school in Sewanee, Tennessee. The school serves students in grades 6-12 and welcomes boarding students in grades 9-12. Students from more than a dozen states and a dozen countries attend SAS for an outstanding college preparatory education in a close-knit school community that cultivates creativity, celebrates individuality, and rejoices in the natural world. The school’s beautiful 550-acre mountaintop campus provides unique opportunities for scientific study and outdoor adventure, including a varsity mountain biking team and club climbing team.
As part of its support for the Episcopal Church, the school also offers an automatic 40% boarding tuition break for children of employees of the Episcopal Church and financial assistance for both day and boarding students who are children of Episcopal seminarians.
Taylor Kavanaugh is one of many former Claiborne Scholars who have gone on to great accomplishment. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Taylor is now pursuing a doctorate in biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University. “I came to SAS looking for greater academic challenge than what was available in my community,” said Taylor. “The Claiborne Scholarship allowed my family to afford SAS. The emphasis on community and outreach helped me to know that I was choosing a school that shared my values.”
