Loading...Ground will be turned Saturday, Sept. 17, to plant a winter garden in raised beds at Metropolitan Ministries on McCallie Avenue, and the garden’s bounty will be distributed to agency clients. The “Bootleg Garden Project” is part of the church’s focus on meeting the nutritional needs of people living in urban areas where obtaining fresh produce is difficult.
The project was funded by a grant from the Jubilee Ministry of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church. Metropolitan Ministries is a designated Jubilee Center.
The beds were constructed by a local home-school co-op family (who wish to remain anonymous), and Chris Buckner of Lawn Enforcement also assisted in site preparation. Volunteers, clients and Metropolitan Ministries staff as well as several parishioners from the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain will fill the beds with various greens, carrots, spinach and lettuce between 9 a.m. and noon.
After the planting the Rev. Wil Keith, associate rector of Good Shepherd, Chattanooga, will bless the garden. The Care for Creation Committee of the church is overseeing the Bootleg Garden Project.
The garden is part of Metropolitan Ministries’ efforts to help prevent homelessness in the greater Chattanooga area by providing assistance with basic needs like rent, utility payments and food.
